L’exposition de 2013 au Musée de Sutton : PROHIBITION!

Le musée d’histoire et de la communication de Sutton présente sa prochaine exposition temporaire 2013 : La prohibition sur la frontière! Elle a comme objectif de faire connaître plusieurs aspects de cette période dans le comté de Brome-Missisquoi et, plus largement, sur la frontière internationale Canada-États-Unis dans les Cantons-de-l’Est.

Elle permettra de découvrir différents aspects politiques, sociaux, juridiques et criminels de la Prohibition dans la région frontalière séparant la province du Québec (Canada) et l’État du Vermont (États-Unis) pour une période historique de 1850 à 1933.Trois thématiques chronologiques organisent l’objectif pédagogique de cette exposition :
  • Les origines de la Prohibition en Amérique du Nord avec l’alcoolisme et la tempérance de 1850 à 1918.
  • L’évolution de la contrebande locale vers le crime organisé américain sur la frontière entre 1890 et 1933.
  • Définition historique de la production et la consommation d’alcool sous la Commission des Liqueurs dès 1921.

L’exposition est produite par Richard Leclerc, président du musée et sera réalisée en collaboration avec Laurent Busseau, historien de la région et Héritage Sutton, qui vient de publier son quinzième numéro de ses Cahiers d’histoire, comprenant un article sur ce sujet. L’apport en ressources et informations du Service patrimonial de la Sureté du Québec s’y intégrera avec l’historique des corps policiers du Québec et leur lutte à la criminalité sur la frontière.

The 2013 exhibition: PROHIBITION!
The Museum presents The prohibition on the border! Its goal is to introduce several aspects of this period in Brome-Missisquoi and, more broadly, on the international border Canada-US in the Eastern Townships.

You will discover various political, social, legal and criminal aspects between the province of Quebec (Canada) and Vermont (United States) for a historical period from 1850 to 1933. Three thematic time organizing the educational goal of this exhibition:

  • The origins of Prohibition in North America with alcoholism and temperance from 1850 to 1918.
  • The evolution of the local smuggling to American organized crime on the border between 1890 and 1933.
  • Historical definition of the production and consumption of alcohol under the Liquor Commission in 1921.

The exhibition is produced by Richard Leclerc, president of the museum and will be conducted in collaboration with Laurent Busseau, local historian and Heritage Sutton, who has just published its fifteenth edition of his history books, including an article on this topic. Providing resources and information from  Service patrimonial de la Sureté du Québec will integrate the history of Québec police forces and fight crime on the border.
